The Seriously Ill Patient : Part 2 - Airway Obstruction

Recognising and Responding to the Seriously Ill Patient

Part 2 : Airway Obstruction

In the management of the acutely ill or traumatised patient, the assessment and management of the airway is the first priority. Protecting or establishing the airway can be extremely anxiety provoking. For many nurses (and doctors), airway management is the most frightening aspect in resuscitation of a seriously ill / injured patient.

In this topic we examine the clinical features that indicate acute airway obstruction focusing especially on the patients at risk and the early clinical red flags that should prompt us to consider the possibility of airway obstruction. The topic explores the basic interventions that can be readily performed by nursing staff to clear the obstructed airway (and save the patient's life !) and in addition identifies patients who will require airway protection (in the form of intubation or LMA) to prevent the risk for aspiration.
