Recognising and Responding to Life Threatening Emergencies
Acute Anaphylaxis
Latest Course update : January 2019
Patients may present with life threatening illness to the hospital, GP surgery or deteriorate while they are an inpatient on the ward. Early recognition and treatment are essential to avoid long term morbidity or even unexpected death.
In the course we explore five such presentations and discuss the clinical features and management of each of these. We begin with anaphylaxis, a frightening emergency that generally presents without warning and requires early recognition and intervention to avoid catastrophic complications. We next examine three presentations that carry a high risk for life threatening disease : acute chest pain, acute severe headache and acute abdominal pain in the elderly patient. The topic ends with a discussion if the very frightening fitting patient with status epilepticus.
