Deteriorating Patient : Part 3 - Resuscitation (1)
Core Nursing Skills
In the previous topic we explored the systematic approach to assessment of the deteriorating patient with the aim being to identify immediate life threats including airway obstruction, hypoxia, shock and hypoglycaemia. In this first of the two topics on "Resuscitation" we identify interventions that may be used at the bedside to respond to these life threats and prevent further deterioration of the patient. In many cases simple interventions such as using basic airway manoeuvres, applying high flow oxygen or administration of a fluid bolus may be literally life saving. The Case Simulation in this topic focuses on the immediate (life saving) management required to treat life threats to the airway and breathing.
