After assessing for immediate life threats and initiating resuscitation measures the next steps are to begin looking for a cause (as this will often guide further treatment) and where required arranging transfer of the patient to higher care. In some patients the diagnosis is relatively straight forward and confirmed with routine investigations. Unfortunately this is not always the case and methodical assessment of the history and examination findings together with the use of selected investigations is required to rule out serious disease. In this module we examine the process of diagnosis and the decision to transfer the patient to higher care.
