Diagnosis and Emergency Management of Cardiac Arrhythmias 2021 (1)

There can be no doubt that in the minds of many clinicians rhythm diagnosis is the most challenging aspect to ECG interpretation. Add to this the recognition that some rhythms may lead to severe circulatory compromise or if not treated early may lead to cardiac arrest and the pressure is on for a rapid diagnosis of the ECG rhythm!

This first section of the course is divided into two parts. In this first part the clinical approach and ECG diagnosis of the patient presenting with an arrhythmia are introduced. The module describes the core principles that enable us to understand how the ECG can be used to determine the origin and movement of depolarisation through the heart facilitating the diagnosis of arrhythmias. Immediate treatment priorities are considered including the clinical features of (life threatening) vital organ hypoperfusion and the clinical approach to interpreting the ECG in the emergency patient is explored. In the final section we focus on narrow complex tachycardia and consider the differential diagnosis and the recognition and emergency management of AV nodal reentry tachycardia (SVT).

The course will specifically review:

1. Clinical Approach to the Patient with Arrhythmia

2. Understanding Depolarisation and the ECG Waveform

3. Classify Rhythms and Formulating a Differential Diagnosis

4. Differential diagnosis and Management of Narrow Complex Tachycardia

5. Diagnosis and Emergency Management of Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT)
