Deteriorating Patient : Part 2 - Immediate Assessment Priorities

Core Nursing Skills

This module explores the structured assessment of the patient in whom we suspect deterioration and identifies the red flags indicating a high risk for serious illness.

It is common for nursing staff to feel anxious when approaching a deteriorating patient. A systematic approach to assessing the deteriorating patient enables nurses to feel confident in identifying immediate life threats. In most circumstance straight forward interventions will address many of these threats. Examples include using basic airway manoeuvres such a jaw thrust or head tilt to clear airway obstruction in an unconscious patient, administration of oxygen in the hypoxic patient, IV fluids in circulatory shock and IV glucose in severe hypoglycaemia. This systematic approach to the deteriorating patient is termed the “Primary Survey” and is the focus of this module. Later modules explore the interventions that may be required to manage threats to the airway, breathing, circulation or central nervous system.
