Emergency Medicine is a challenging and rewarding field of medical care. Everyday we are faced with medical presentations and diseases we have not seen before and can easily feel out of our depth as we faced with making rapid decisions with limited information. It can often feel as though we are detectives searching for the clues to solve the mystery of a patient's symptoms.

Yes, there is a lot to learn! But, like many things in life, once a particular pattern or general approach is recognised, things become a lot more straight forward. Often the same approach and principles can be applied to a wide variety of clinical presentations enabling you to assess, manage and recognise a wide range of serious illness or injury. The aim of this course will be to provide you with the framework and knowledge of emergency medicine that will provide a strong foundation, wherever your career takes you to in the future.

In this first module we focus on the immediate assessment of the acutely ill or injured patient. How we approach the assessment and initiate treatment may significantly determine a patient's chances of survival, risk for complications, and long-term disability. In seriously ill patients, we are frequently required to identify and act on life threatening problems such as airway obstruction, severe hypoxia, circulatory shock or hypoglycaemia before assistance arrives or have the opportunity to complete a thorough clinical assessment of the patient. By the end of this course you should know the priorities in assessing the seriously ill patient, identify immediate life threatening illness and feel comfortable to deliver acute care in the emergency patient within the scope of your clinical skills.
