Emergency Medicine on the EDGE

The EDGE course accredited by ACRRM (Activity Number 17254) and RACGP (40 Category 1 points, Activity Number 163884). Applications are in progress for the medical and nursing colleges : ACEM, ACN.

Anaphylaxis is a frightening emergency that may present without warning and requires early recognition and intervention to avoid catastrophic complications. It results from a severe hypersensitivity reaction and presents clinically with cardiovascular collapse and / or severe respiratory distress from upper airway obstruction or severe bronchospasm. Symptoms develop rapidly often within several minutes, (but may develop within seconds to as long as an hour), after contact with the allergen. Urgent treatment is required to prevent progression to cardiac arrest.

While the diagnosis of anaphylaxis may be relatively straight forward when it presents with acute urticarial rash and upper airway oedema following a recognised trigger this is not always the case and diagnosis can be challenging, delayed or even missed. In the following topic we explore the range of presentations for anaphylaxis and emphasise the awareness we need to carry with us at all times for this life threatening but easily treatable condition. It is certainly true that the early recognition and treatment of acute anaphylaxis can save a life and the following topic therefore is one of significant importance to Emergency Medicine.
