EDGE24 Module 17 : Severe Asthma in a Child
Latest Course Update: January 2024
The child with severe life threatening asthma is arguably one of the most frightening paediatric emergencies experiences to manage as a clinician. As failure to recognise the severity of the attack and under-treatment of severe illness are major contributing factors to mortality resulting from asthma it is critical to evaluate the child carefully and identify severe or life threatening asthma requiring urgent bronchodilator therapy and supportive care.
In this module we focus on the clinical clues in history (red flags) that signal a child at high risk for a life threatening asthma and explore the currently recommended approach to managing severe and life threatening asthma in a child drawing on recent research that has informed National Clinical Guidelines.
