About the POCUS for Nurse Practitioners

This two-day workshop is designed to assist Nurse Practitioners to become confident with the use of POCUS in their clinical practice. The course will focus on providing the knowledge and hands on training required for the ultrasound assessment of the lungs, eye, eFAST (trauma), deep vein thrombosis, soft tissue foreign body and ultrasound procedures including vascular access and nerve block.

The course is delivered using blended model of training that provides online prelearning to cover core knowledge together with a hands-on workshop to teach procedural skills and simulation with the aim of building confidence with scanning technique, image optimisation and recognition of pathology.

The workshop covers

The course assists Nurse Practitioners to become confident to

  • Setup a range of common ultrasound machines, become familiar with technique for using the ultrasound probe and the fundamentals for image optimisation

  • Use bedside ultrasound to assess the lung

  • Use bedside ultrasound to assess the eye

  • Perform the eFAST examination in the setting of trauma

  • Assess the lower limb for deep vein thrombosis

  • Use ultrasound to identify and assist with the removal of soft tissue foreign bodies

  • Use ultrasound to assist with procedures including vascular access and nerve block
