ALS Instructor (ALSi) Recertification Workshop (Pilot Program)
A Two Day Workshop for Recertification of currently accredited ALS Facilitators
Please Note; This program is only available to a currently accredited ALS Facilitators and is being piloted with restricted numbers for the first workshop. Where accreditation has lapsed completion of the ALS Instructor Training Program will be required.
The ALS Instructor Course is a blended learning program that incorporates a two day face to face workshop providing Advanced Life Support (ALS2) certification (Day 1) and ALSi Work Based Assessment (Day 2).
Course Learning Outcomes
At the completion of the workshop the learner should be able to
-
Demonstrate knowledge of the ANZCOR ALS guidelines and proficiency in the core competencies required for ALS2 certification
-
Apply teaching behaviours and attitudes that incorporate adult learning principles and promote learner centred clinical teaching.
-
Deliver white board presentations relevant to Advanced Life Support that demonstrate structure, relevance and the engagement of learners.
-
Structure and teach procedural skills relevant to Advanced Life Support that considers the environment, time constraints, learners needs and background, equipment and assessment of learning.
-
Deliver Advanced Life Support simulation scenarios that are realistic, appropriate to the learner's level of skill/knowledge, take account of learner safety and recognise the critical role of debrief in maximising learning and reflection.
-
Become self-reflective educators that actively seek to continue to learn, develop their skills and draw on observer feedback to continually develop their teaching practice.
Course Structure
1. Course Prelearning
The Prelearning is divided into two parts:
-
The first component reviews the core knowledge required in Advanced Life Support including Basic CPR, ALS algorithms and the Assessment and Immediate Management priorities in the Critically Ill or Deteriorating Patient.
-
The second component explores the development and delivery of key skills required for Small Group Discussion, Skill Stations and Immersive Simulation relevant to teaching "Advanced Life Support".
2. ALS Certification (Day1)
Day one of the face to face (F2F) program is an "Advanced Life Support" workshop. The workshop focuses on allowing learner to be exposed to a range of teaching styles, consolidate their knowledge and skills in Basic and Advanced Life Support and be certified for ALS.
3. Work Based Assessment (Day 2)
Following successful completion of Day 1 (ALS Certification) participants complete a one day workshop in which they have the opportunity to undertake and complete work based assessments the three specific skill areas required for teaching ALS:
-
Small Group Interactive (White board) Discussions (eg ALS algorithm, Reversible causes, Primary Survey),
-
Procedural Skills Stations (eg Basic life support, Defibrillation, Basic Airway, Cardiac Pacing),
-
ALS Simulation for consolidation of ALS skills and assessment of ALS competency
The workshop provides the opportunity to teach a range of procedural skills and algorithms relevant to the advanced life support curriculum, learn from observing their peers and receive individual constructive feedback and complete the work based assessments for ALSi Recertification.
Please note the following for your information
-
The Course requires you to complete the Pre-learning prior to the workshop
-
Successfully complete the "ALS Certification" workshop (Day 1)
-
Attend the workshop (both days). Please take note of the terms and conditions with respect to cancellation. View Terms and Conditions
-
Work Based Assessments are a central component for certification and provide a structured assessment of ALS instructor skills leading a small group discussion, a ALS procedural skill station and an ALS simulation. The WBAs are completed during the workshop on Day 2.
