CHSA - ALS Pre-Course eLearning 2016

CHSA - ALS Pre-Course eLearning

The ALS Course is a combined online / skills workshop program developed as part of the Rural Emergency Skills Program (RESP) and Country Health SA to provide nurses with a broad understanding of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines for

    • Basic and Advanced Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

    • Management of the patient with Acute myocardial ischaemia

    • Immediate assessment and Resuscitation of the Critically ill Patient

    • Basic Airway Management

    • Noninvasive ventilation

The ALS course is a blended program. This means that some of the learning is done online (eLearning) and some undertaken face to face in a workshop setting.

The On-line component is divided into 9 sections or modules. In the first four modules we focus on managing cardiac arrest or intervening to prevent cardiac arrest in the patient with acute myocardial ischaemia or foreign body airway obstruction. In the remaining 5 modules we shift our attention to the assessment and resuscitation of the critically ill and deteriorating patient and explore in particular airway obstruction, respiratory distress, noninvasive ventilation and circulatory shock.

In each module a short introductory video (eTutorial) that provides an overview of the topic followed by an interactive case discussion where you are presented with a clinical case and work through a series of questions to learn more about the topic. There is no formal grading of the interactive case discussion and it can be repeated as many times as required until you feel confident you understand the topic. The final step in the module is to successfully complete the quiz. You may have up to 5 attempts at the quiz so it is not essential to pass with the first attempt. A passmark of 70% in the quiz is required for satisfactory completion of topic .

For each module additional clinical resources are provided. These are for reference or to assist in clinical work. There is no requirement to open or view these as part of the course.
