Advanced Life Support : Part 3 - NonShockable Cardiac Arrest

Basic and Advanced Life Support

Part (3) : ALS - NonShockable Cardiac Arrest

Latest Course update : January 2019

In our third module (and second ALS topic) we focus on the management of Non-Shockable rhythms (Asystole, Pulseless Electrical Activity) and consider on reversible causes for cardiac arrest, the algorithm for managing non-shockable cardiac arrest. The course discusses the difficult decision of deciding when to stop CPR and outlines some basic guidelines that assist with determining when continuing CPR is likely to be futile or at best result in poor neurological outcome.

At the completion of this topic you should be able to readily identify nonshockable rhythms, describe the use of Adrenaline and list the significant reversible causes for cardiac arrest that should be considered including hypovolaemia, tension pneumothorax and hyperkalaemia.
