Advanced Life Support : Part 4 - Foreign Body Airway Obstruction

Advanced Cardiac Life Support

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation

Latest Course update : January 2019

Foreign body airway obstruction is common. It may occur in adults (eg cafe coronary due to a food bolus) but is most often seen in the toddler where lollies, peanuts, toys are common causes. Complete airway obstruction can lead to cardiac arrest in as little as 4 to 10 minutes and irreversible CNS damage within 3 to 5 minutes.

Foreign body airway obstruction is frightening not only for the victim but for those witnessing the situation. We all know that every year adults and children die from airway obstruction and what seems so very sad is that it is totally preventable. It is clear therefore that like cardiac arrest we must be vigilant to the risk or development of foreign body airway obstruction and be ready to act to assist the victim. In this module we explore the signs of airway obstruction and the procedure for what we should (or should not) do to assist the victim depending on their ability to cough and conscious state. Unfortunately when this event occurs in one of our patients there is no time to look up what to do and there is often no one else around to assist us initially - we really do need to have the algorithm for managing FB airway obstruction fixed in our mind before the event.
