EDGE24

Anaphylaxis is a frightening emergency that may present without warning and requires early recognition and intervention to avoid catastrophic complications. Symptoms develop rapidly often within several minutes, (but may develop within seconds to as long as an hour), after contact with the allergen. Urgent treatment is required to prevent progression to cardiac arrest.

In this module we explore the range of presentations for anaphylaxis and emphasise the awareness we need to carry with us at all times for this life threatening but readily treatable condition. It is certainly true that the early recognition and treatment of acute anaphylaxis can save a life and the following topic is one of significant importance to Emergency Medicine.
