EDGE24 Module 15 : Recognising and Managing the Seriously Ill Child
Latest Course Update: January 2024
It is easy to miss the seriously ill child who presents with subtle clinical findings, or feel uncomfortable when required to manage the seriously ill child. The young child with acute illness presents major challenges to the clinician due to incomplete history (eg the infant who is unable to report symptoms), difficulties with examination (eg the crying or uncooperative child) and the subtle features of serious disease that may be easily overlooked or missed.
In this module we focus on the assessment and immediate management priorities in the seriously ill child with a focus on the clues (or Red Flags) in the history and clinical findings on examination that should alert us to the presence of serious illness.
