EDGE24 Module 19 : Emergency Management of Burn Injury
Latest Course Update: January 2024
There are many priorities in managing the patient with burns and these pose a challenge to the clinician in deciding how to approach management. Particular attention should be placed on assessing the airway for evidence of inhalational burn injury that may progress to complete airway obstruction. Fluid resuscitation requires careful thought to ensure that not only is shock identified and treated but also that consideration is given to the continuing loss of fluid from the burn injury.
In this module we explore the immediate priorities in the management of burn injury including cooling of the injury, local burn management, burn dressings and referral, analgesia, tetanus prophylaxis and giving consideration to the possibility of other trauma related injuries and toxic gas exposure such a carbon monoxide poisoning.
