EDGE24 Module 13 : Abdominal Pain in the Elderly Patient

Acute abdominal pain is a common cause of serious illness. As the population ages, emergency care will be increasingly confronted with elderly patients presenting with acute abdominal pain. It is vital to have a sound approach to the assessment, investigation and management of these patients as presentations with serious pathology can be subtle and easily missed in this population.

In this module we examine the red flags for serious illness to the elderly patient with acute abdominal pain, identify the life threatening conditions that may present in this group and consider the role of investigations to assist identifying or ruling out serious disease.

This topic assist the clinician to develop a structured and informed approach to assessment that will reduce the risk of missing serious disease in this population.


Accreditation

A "Course Certificate" for 36 CPD hours can be requested upon completion of all 24 modules. The course is CPD accredited for the 2023-2025 triennium with ACRRM (Course Code : 28766) and RACGP (Course Code : 403496: 24.5 Educational Activity and 11.5 Reviewing Performance Hours).
